ACCEPTABLE FORMS OF IDENTIFICATION

Valid forms of ID include:

  • Unexpired passport
  • Driver’s license
  • Government-issued identification card
  • Another government identification issued to an individual that is currently valid

Identification must contain the individual’s signature or a photograph of the individual. A notary may refuse to notarize a signature if he or she is uncertain of an individual’s identity or if the notary is uncomfortable with the validity of the identification documents.

A notary public is a person of integrity appointed by the Governor to serve the public as an impartial and unbiased witness. The most common function of the notary is to prevent fraud by witnessing and attesting that a person signing a document is authentic.
WHAT IS A LOAN CLOSING AGENT?
Under Minnesota law, a real estate closing agent is defined as any person who, for another, directly or indirectly provides closing services incident to the sale, trade, lease, or loan of residential real estate, including drawing or assisting in drawing papers incident to the sale, trade, lease, loan, or advertises or claims to be engaged in these activities.
